Week in Review for Indie Devs: August 31 – September 6, 2026

Indie dev week of Aug 31-Sep 6, 2026: Sept 9 Apple event, mandatory age-rating answers, Rosetta's end date, and Android's Sept 30 verification deadline.

The short version: the week of August 31 to September 6 looked quiet, but it front-loaded three dated obligations. Apple's "Surprise and shine" event lands September 9 and, per MacRumors' event guide, the new OS releases could follow as soon as September 14 — which makes this coming week your compatibility-testing window, not next month. Apple's new age-rating questions became mandatory this month: submissions without answers to the social-media-capability question don't go through. And Android developer verification enforcement starts September 30 in four countries. Details and dates below.

The September 9 event is a deadline wearing a keynote costume

Apple's September edition of Hello Developer confirms the event: Wednesday, September 9, 10 a.m. PT, streamed on apple.com, Apple TV, and YouTube. MacRumors expects iPhone 18 Pro models, a foldable iPhone Ultra, new Watches, and AirPods 5 — none of which changes your Wednesday. What changes your Wednesday is the other thing that traditionally happens at this event: Apple announces release dates for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and the rest of the fall OS lineup, then seeds release candidates. MacRumors' read of the historical pattern puts public release "as soon as September 14."

Run the arithmetic on that. If the RC drops on the 9th or 10th and the OS ships on the 14th, you have roughly three working days between the final build and millions of users updating. Whatever compatibility testing you planned to do "when the RC comes out" — the honest window for it is this week, on the current betas. The RC exists to confirm what you already tested, not to start.

Same edition of Hello Developer, two smaller items: Apple published two video tutorials on App Store Connect analytics (acquisition and monetization), and opened signups for in-person and livestreamed developer events in Cupertino, including a performance workshop. Free, and the analytics tutorials are Apple explaining which of your numbers it thinks matter — worth 20 minutes for that alone.

The age-rating questionnaire is no longer optional

This one was announced in July and is biting now. Apple updated the age-rating questionnaire in App Store Connect with new questions about social media capabilities, feeding the Time Allowances feature in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 — parents will be able to cap time by category, and "Social Media" is one of the categories.

The compliance mechanics, per Apple: answering became possible on July 9 and became mandatory in September 2026. As of this month, new apps, app updates, and apps submitted for notarization for alternative distribution cannot be submitted without responses. If your next update bounces at submission with an age-rating complaint, this is why.

The definition worth reading twice: a social media capability is "the ability to redistribute, amplify, or interact with user-generated content through a social feed or similar discovery method." That's broader than "is a social network." If your app has a public feed of user content — reviews, shared workouts, community levels — you likely answer yes, and your product page gets a Social Media content descriptor. One carve-out: if those capabilities are disabled for users under 13, the app stays out of the under-13 Social Media time-allowance bucket.

Rosetta now has an expiration date

On September 1, Apple put dates on the end of Rosetta as a general-purpose translation layer. Starting with macOS 26.4, users may see system notifications when they launch Intel-only apps. macOS 27, shipping this fall, is the final release that runs them; after that, Intel-only apps stop working on Apple silicon Macs.

For most iOS-first indie devs this is a shrug. If you ship a Mac app — or quietly depend on an Intel-only helper tool, plugin, or internal utility — the fix is the same as it's been since 2020: build universal binaries. The difference is that the deadline is no longer "eventually."

Android: a stable Studio release and a 24-day countdown

Two items on the Android side. First, the Android Developers Blog announced on September 1 that Android Studio Quail 4 is stable, with Gemma 4 integration for AI-assisted development. Routine, but it's the toolchain most of us update on stable releases, so: it's out.

Second, the one with a date attached: Android developer verification enforcement begins September 30 — 24 days from this writing — in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, across Google Play and six other participating stores including Galaxy Store and OPPO App Market. Unregistered apps face removal in those regions, with sideloading via adb as the remaining path. Google says 99% of Play apps were registered automatically, so the odds are you're covered — but "the odds are" is not a verification, and the check takes two minutes in Play Console. Developers distributing outside Play need the Android Developer Console, and that registration is on you, not automatic.

The countdown board

Dates on the calendar as of September 6: Apple event September 9; new OS releases expected around September 14 (Apple hasn't confirmed the date — that's MacRumors' pattern-based estimate); Android verification enforcement September 30; and Apple's new EU business terms take effect October 1, which we covered in last week's note on reading platform announcements. If you track your store presence in one place — we're building Kintsu for exactly this, currently in private beta for indie developers — these four dates are the whole month.

The pattern across all four: none of them is news this week, exactly. They're all consequences of announcements made in June, July, and August arriving on schedule. The platforms tell you the dates early; the cost is only ever in not writing them down.

FAQ

What should I actually do before September 9?

Test your app on the current iOS 27 beta this week, since the gap between release candidate and public release may be only a few days. If you plan a day-one compatible update, have it built and ready for submission so only the RC-verification pass remains.

My app update was rejected over age ratings — what changed?

As of September 2026, Apple requires answers to new age-rating questions about social media capabilities before any submission — new apps, updates, and notarization for alternative distribution. Open App Store Connect, complete the updated questionnaire, and resubmit. The questions take minutes; read the social-media definition carefully before answering no.

Does Android developer verification affect me if I'm not in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, or Thailand?

Enforcement on September 30 covers those four countries, but removal for unregistered apps applies to your app's availability in those regions regardless of where you are based. Google plans global expansion from 2027, so verifying now — or confirming you were auto-registered — costs less than doing it under deadline later.

Do I need to care about the Rosetta announcement?

Only if you ship Mac software or tools that are Intel-only. macOS 27 is the last release that runs them on Apple silicon. If everything you ship is a universal binary already, nothing changes.
